Get to know the Salvator Mile

Oceanport, New Jersey will host the sixty-first running of the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon and the winner will be granted a spot in the B.C. Mile on November 7th, 2009

The grade III, eight furlong race is named for U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Salvator.

The inaugural running of the event in 1948 produced a veteran winner, seven year-old VertigoII. Twenty years later another seven year-old R. Thomas (1968) before a thirty-two year drought that would be snapped by another aging equine. Leave it to Beezer claimed the 2000 Salvator to once again put a seven year-old in the drivers seat at Monmouth.

If trends are any indication we won't be seeing another seven year-old winner of the Salvator Mile, at least in the next thirty years {This won't be an issue going into this years race. Kiss the Kid will be the grand-father of the field at the age of six}.

Sea of Tranquility 01', 02' and Peanut Butter Onit 91' and 92' have clinched back to back Salvator Mile's and no horse has ever claimed the race on three occasions. This years field is without last years winner (Notional) so a fresh face in the winners circle is guaranteed.

My two cents;Zee's golden nuggets

I must admit that with out a copy of this Saturday's racing forum I'm not exactly familiar with all the players (horses) in the game. I will however try to illuminate this issue to the best of abilities.
