Today Rickey Henderson is a very, very humble man

Videos

No footage found.

When a professional reaches the pinnacle of his or her career cockiness often gives way to confidence and what was once seen as a negative become a positive, a tool utilized to help one achieve their ultimate goal. Nowhere has this been more clearly demonstrated then in the case of Major League Baseball's all-time stolen base leader Rickey Henderson, who today was inducted into Cooperstown (the baseball hall of fame)

Throughout Rickey Henderson's remarkable career the terms cocky, arrogant and flamboyant often over shadowed actions like home-run and stolen base but yesterday in Cooperstown, New York Rickey accomplishments finally caught up with him.

Born in Chicago , Illinois on Christmas Day Rickey moved to Oakland, California at the age of two. Born with the surname Nelson which would be abandoned shortly after the family made it to the west coast. Rickey's mother Bobbie, who was in attendance for yesterday ceremony married Paul Henderson in Rickey  junior year in High School and why not Rickey Henderson sure does have a fine ring to it.

Rickey finished his career with more Stolen Bases (1406) and more lead-off home-runs (81) then any player in Major League history. Rickey also collected 10 all-star selections, 2 World Series rings and 2,295 runs scored well suiting up for 10 different Major League teams.

Sunday afternoon Rickey Henderson received the ultimate accolade for a man in his profession, a bust in Cooperstown. On this day nobody called Rickey cocky or arrogant those words were replaced by terms like confident, assertive and Hall of Famer.

Congratulation to Hall of Fame Class of 09' Rickey Henderson, Jim Rice and 42' AL MVP Joe Gordon

Why don't your write about the Toronto Blue Jays

Videos

No footage found.

Since I started posting sports article on NowPublic almost two years ago I've had a couple of loyal NowPublic reader ask me why I don't write more about sports teams from the Toronto area, more specifically the Toronto Blue Jays. My response was usually a deflection of the questions. A question I really didn't want to answer.

But after watching today's game between the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium I decided that I was finally going to speak up. No more keeping my trap shut.

The reason I don't write about the Toronto Blue Jays, despite being a regular attendee at the Rogers Center during the summer months is that I really don't have anything good to say and producing a regular column full of sour grapes would be sure to give both me and my readers a vicious case of heartburn.

With that being said allow be to lay down some sour grapes.

Now I love Cito Gaston as much as the next guy. He helped bring two world championships to Toronto, robbing the United States of their most important crown two years running. He also played a major part in guaranteeing my support for the club even through its darkest days. Although attendance at the Roger Center is poultry to say the very least, a large percentage of any Jays crowd is made up of my peers, young-men and women who watched droopy eyed as the Jays claim the 92' World Series and the again very attentively as the Jays claimed their second titles in 93'. However nostalgia is no reason to saddle a franchise desperately in need of re-building with a coach that knows little if any thing about the re-building process. Gaston first took over for Jays bench boss Jimy Williams back in 89' three year before the Jays bought their first World Series adding pitcher Jack Morris and outfielders Rickey "I just got inducted into Cooperstown" Henderson, Paul Molitor and Dave Winfield to an already stacked line-up (Joe Carter, Roberto Alomar and John Olerud). The team that won the 92' World Series was bought for the city of Toronto in Stienbrenner like fashion, not built from the ground up like the Rays or Marlins franchises.

I understand nostalgia sell tickets...and throw-back jerseys too.

The reason today's Rangers, Royals game had me wanting to make wine was Royals Bench Coach and former Toronto Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons. A no nonsense product of Great Falls, Montana, Gibbons is as close to being Gastons polar opposite as could be possible. Cito is calm, quite and often times appears to be taking a snooze in the dug-out. Gibbons on the other hand is boisterous, in your face and not afraid to put a big-headed player in his place with a right, left combo straight out of Raging Bull (something I would not be afraid to have happen to this years editions of Alex Rios and Vernon Wells)

Gibbons finished his tenure with the Jays winning as many games as he lost, 305 over almost four complete season during a time when the Jays still thought they might buy their way into the post-season (See B.J. Ryan, Frank Thomas and David Eckstien) Now, thanks to division mates Tampa Bay, Toronto has relized that the key to re-building a franchise is keeping it in the family.

Gibbons isn't the only former Jays coach that the franchise could hire for reasons of nostalgia. Carlos Tosca the current Bench Boss of the Florida Marlins must have learned something about re-building from his brief tenure with the fish? And lets not forget the Head Coach of the Atlantic Leagues Bridgeport Bluefish Willie Upshaw, ten years coaching at the Atlantic League level would probably give a guy some real insight into working with young player, the kind of young player you need to depend on if you hope to re-build your franchise.

Or perhaps you're one of those who believe that Carlos Tosca 04' and John Gibbons 08' don't cut the nostalgic mustard.

Well if that's the case then the Jays could always opt for Atlanta Braves Head Coach Bobby Cox, who despite having a coaching career that predates my own birth isn't afraid to get up out of his dug-out to give an umpires a little hell. Cox managed the Jay between 82' and 85' before moving on to his current role as Braves Head Coach. No stranger to being tossed the fiery 68 year-old Cox is the Major League Ejections Leader (having been tossed out of more Major League games then any other player/coach)

If aged meat is not a problem for the Jays front office when selecting a Head Coach (which it is not, see Cito Gaston) allow me to put forth the nomination of Jimy Williams. Williams managed the Jays over twenty years ago from 86' until 89' but still has plenty of gas left in the tank as evidence by his World Series win as Head Coach of the Philadelphia Phillies this past season.

Now I'm out of breath and out off gas, witness why I choose not to right about the Toronto Blue Jays.

Nats Pitcher Avoids Being Feed to Lions

Jordan Zimmermann to be feed to the lion?

Following back to back opulent performances by Nats starters John Lannan and Craig Stamen it appears that Jordan Zimmermann (perhaps the young Nats hurler with the brightest future?) will be sent to the hill as a sacrificial lamb.

The twenty-eight win Washington Nationals host the Central Division leading St. Louis Cardinals and sure fire M.V.P. candidate Winnie the Pujols at Nationals Park this evening following back to back victories over a depleted New York Mets squad.

When you're winning as few games as the Nats this season you learn to appreciate the small victories, like claiming a two games set against an ailing roster but small victories are little assurance when the big boys role into town. Which is indeed the case this evening when the Nationals and Cardinals finish up what they started back on April 30th when the Cardnials won the first two games of a three game series before rain washed out the series finale on May 3rd.

The Cardnials are currently on a bit of a skid losing three straight to the Astros in Houston and six of their last ten overall.

A narrow escape for Jordan Zimmermann

Just as I've come to the conclusion of this post and update flashes across my computer screen. Nats placed starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann on 15-day disabled list due to elbow discomfort and will call on Collin Balester to make the start this evening against St. Louis. Balester was called up from triple-a Syracuse on Wednesday and will promptly be feed to the lions (Cardnials) in Zimmermann's place.

Breeders' Cup Challenge...Tough luck for trainer Pletcher

Videos

No footage found.

Last week thoroughbred trainer Todd Pletcher lead his charge Game Face to a victory in the Princess Rooney Stakes a Breeders" Cup "win & your in" challenge race at South Florida's Calder Race Course.

This week-end Pletcher experienced a reversal of fortune entirely to familiar to this track-side handicapper. Pletcher had the favourite in both of this weekends "win & your in" races and failed to deliver on back to back days.

Saturday in the Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philadelphia Park, Pletcher's charge Nite Light had the services of Team Pletcher top jock John Velazquez and the betting publics support but was hung out to dry finishing fifth after a failed stretch bid. Alcomo a 6 year-old Brazilian bred trained by Eduardo Caramori? and ridden to victory by Willie Martinez claimed the guaranteed spot in the Breeders' Cup Marathon at Santa Anita in November.

Sunday was only slightly different. Unbridled Belle lacked her best under veteran rider Richard Migliore and for the second time in as many day a Todd Pletcher trainee would fail as the odds on choice. Both Unbridled Belle and second choice Icon Project were no match for pace minded front runner Swift Temper who barring down in the stretch put away her rivals and claimed a spot in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. All under the watchful eyes of jockey Alan Garcia.

Pletcher will continue to "throw'em out there" until all the guaranteed Breeders' Cup "win & your in" races have been exhausted. With a stable that dwarf all of his North American counter-parts Pletcher is more than cable of flooding the Breeders' Cup Challenge and tilting the scales in favour. Weather these tactics bare any fruit when November rolls around is another discussion for another day.

Plethcer and the rest of North America's Breeders' Cup hopefuls have two weeks to lick their wound before we get back to "win & your in" racing at Del Mar Race Track (Where the surf meets the turf) on Sunday August 2nd. The 1 1/16 mile San Diego Handicap will go to post Sunday afternoon three days before the 1 1/2 mile Cougar II Handicap. The San Diego winner will be guaranteed a spot in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile joining Salvator Mile winner and fellow "win & your in'er" Coal Play. The Cougar II winner will fill a spot in the Breeders' Cup Marathon joining Greenwood Handicap winner Alcomo on the list of qualified Marathon parties.

Zoltan Black

Hopefully the two week break will give me enough of a heads up to produce some solid pre-race coverage before August 2nd's San Diego Handicap roles around but in the world of thoroughbred horse racing you never can tell.

The All Boys Club --

It's 2008' and sometimes it seems like every possible barrier has been broken down.

I mean the President of the United States has roots in Africa (don't we all).

Hillory Clinton [a "woman" (for those not in the know)] would likely have held the same post had Obama not surged past an early defeat in the state of Rhode Island.

Back in 07' former NBA player John Amaechi became the first openly gay NBA player (past, present or future)

Also my personal attorney is a little person, who has a strong preference to the term midget and does a fantastic job managing my legal portfolio despite the obvious opsticles he faced attempting to pass the bar {This is in no way a joke at the expense of the vertically challenged, rather it is an attempt to give my attorney a little fame in exchange for a 10% discount on my current tab}.

So which barriers are left to be crashed?

Before today I must admit I'd been the prototypical male... ...totally unaware that in 2008' almost 90 years removed from the passing of the 19th Amendment that women had still not broken the ranks of Major League umpires. Yeah that's right!! Women have been voting for almost 100 years but apparently we don't trust them enough to call balls and strike during a big league game.

Have you seen some of the call their male counter parts have made?

Honestly have you?

Aside from the 10 or so quality umpires scatter through-out the Majors these guys (pro umps) blow all kind of easy calls.  At the end of the day I have to ask myself, would a women do a better job?

The answer with a raised eyebrow and a coy smile is... ...probably.

Topps pulls Bernie Madoff card before it hits shelves

Photos

No footage found.

This years Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball cards have already hit store shelves, minus the highly anticipated rookie card of fraudster Bernie Madoff.

Yeah, that's right!! The modern day Charlies Ponzi, responsible for bilking the "innocent" out of billions of their hard earned dollars was set to see the release of a baseball card featuring his likeness.

This is no joke!! The card was intended to be part of Allen & Ginter's Biggest Hoaxes, Hoodwinks and Bamboozles sub-set before the fine folks at MLB kindly requested the exclusion of said card.

The sub-set, Hoaxes, Hoodwinks and Bamboozles will count on criminal giants like Charles Ponzi, news-makers like the Runaway Bride and failed ventures like Cold Fusion and Enron to complete it's twenty card collection.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge... ...4 Down & 58 To Go

Precious Passion & Coal Play became the first North American based charges to qualify for Novembers Breeders' Cup.

Coal Play, infamous for his performance in last years Haskell Invitational where he set the pace before faltering late against Eclipse award winning champion Big Brown cut back in distance to a mile on Saturday afternoon and was rewarded with an effortless romp. Coal Play collected the lions share of the $250,000 purse and a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on November 7th.

Precious Passion's victory in the United Nations Stakes made Coal Play's effortless romp looked like a 12 hour a day, 6 day a week labour job. Passion raced out to an early lead in the 1 3/4 mile race tallying a twenty length lead before the field had a chance to pass the grandstand for the very first time. Passion continued to toy with the field along the backstretch before cruising to a two length victory. Although the field was closing in on Precious Passion as they passed the grandstand for the second time, nobody including second place finisher Lauro had the racing luck to catch Passion on the front end. Jockey Elvis Trujillo & trainer Mary Hartmann now have a spot reserved aboard Precious Passion for the mile and a half Breeders' Cup Turf on November 7th.

Both of Saturday's "Win & Your In" races produced exciting results and sure fire winners with neither Precious Passion or Coal Play really being challenged in their respective races.

Next weekend the excitement heads to Arlington Racetrack in Arlington Heights, Illinois for the 5.5 furlong Arlington Sprint Handicap. Calder Racecourse in lovely south Florida will host two "Win & Your In" races this weekend. The 6 furlong Princess Rooney Handicap and  6 furlong Smile Sprint Handicap. All three sprints come with Breeders' Cup guarantees. The Arlington feeds into the B.C. Turf Sprint, the Princess Rooney feeds the B.C. Filly & Mare Sprint and the Smile Sprint Handicap will fill slots in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Bullish on the Breeders' Cup... ...The Salvator Mile -- Preview

Get to know the Salvator Mile

Oceanport, New Jersey will host the sixty-first running of the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon and the winner will be granted a spot in the B.C. Mile on November 7th, 2009

The grade III, eight furlong race is named for U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Salvator.

The inaugural running of the event in 1948 produced a veteran winner, seven year-old VertigoII. Twenty years later another seven year-old R. Thomas (1968) before a thirty-two year drought that would be snapped by another aging equine. Leave it to Beezer claimed the 2000 Salvator to once again put a seven year-old in the drivers seat at Monmouth.

If trends are any indication we won't be seeing another seven year-old winner of the Salvator Mile, at least in the next thirty years {This won't be an issue going into this years race. Kiss the Kid will be the grand-father of the field at the age of six}.

Sea of Tranquility 01', 02' and Peanut Butter Onit 91' and 92' have clinched back to back Salvator Mile's and no horse has ever claimed the race on three occasions. This years field is without last years winner (Notional) so a fresh face in the winners circle is guaranteed.

My two cents;Zee's golden nuggets

I must admit that with out a copy of this Saturday's racing forum I'm not exactly familiar with all the players (horses) in the game. I will however try to illuminate this issue to the best of abilities.

#6 Two Step Salsa  Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor  Jockey: Garrett Gomez -- First class Trainer Saeed has flown in the nations leading rider Garrett Gomez for this "win & your in" challenge race.

Bullish on the Breeders' Cup.. ..Are you Alien or something?

Videos

No footage found.

What does the acronym B.C.C. stand for?

If the Breeders' Cup is the Super Bowl of the North American thoroughbred horse racing season then the Road to the Breeders' Cup "win and your in" championship series {AKA -The Breeders' Cup Challenge -- B.C.C.} is certainly the playoffs.

Since its inception back in 07' the Breeders' Cup Challenge has continued to thrive, climbing from a 25 race 7 track mainly American affair to a full blown international event. Complete with 62 races 7 host countries and 1 mammoth coming together at Santa Anita in November.

Is the Breeders' Cup on a high?

Point#1

The B.C.C. has taken the "q" from John Public and avoided the plight of the American economy via a process of simple international diversification. 12 new international races. Seven host nations, France, England, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and the United States.

Point#2

Thanks to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, who also claimed the 08' Breeders' Cup Juvenile the Breeders' appears to be breathing a breath of fresh air. Although The Bird did not even compete in one of last years 57 "win and your in" Breeders' Cup Challenge races 34 other horses did make the starting gate for the 08' Breeders' Cup following a victory in one of the B.C.C. races.

Point#3

Of the 34 winners to make it to Santa Anita last November, 5 made it to the winners circle. An astoundingly high number give the limited number of actual Breeders' Cup races (14). Forever Together, Ravens Pass, Maram, Stardom Bound and the out of this world and still undefeated Zenyatta all capture wins in the B.C.C. and  then parlayed those victory into wins at Santa Anita in November.

This years B.C.C.

This year two competitors, both from abroad have already qualified for the big dance @ OakTree (Nov. 6-7).

Sight Winner claimed a ticket to the Breeders' Cup Mile on April 26'th when winning the Champions Mile (Gr.1) @ Sha Tin race course in Hong Kong by a head over the front running Eygptian Ra.

Dar Re Mi won the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr.1) and will have a spot reserved in the Breeders' Cup Filly Mare Turf starting gate on November 7'th.

North American Qualifying

This weekend will see the commencement of B.C.C. race on this continent with both the Salvator Mile and United Nations Stakes going to post Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Park (not sure if I will get around to posting any prerace coverage, but check in I will certainly try)

For My Part...

My home track, Woodbine in Etobicoke, Ontario Canada will play host to a set of six B.C.C. races and I will do everything I can to produce an up-close and personal look at the Road to the Breeders' Cup.
