Even more Road to the Kentucky Derby...Florida Derby Recap

Videos

No footage found.

Dunkirk’s loss in Saturday’s Florida Derby was indeed everyone else gain.

Pre-race: Florida Derby

Just hours before the start of the Florida Derby, American uber trainer Todd Pletcher bit the bullet and scratched Europe, a horse he had entered in the Florida Derby with the intent of making him a rabbit. The goal was for Europe (who has a fondness for the front of the pack) to pressure Quality Road on the front end where the James Jerkens trainee would be looking to control the early fractions.

As North-America’s top trainer, it appears that Todd Pletcher is held to a different standard then all the rest.

Following his decision to enter Europe in Saturday’s Florida Derby, Todd Pletcher took a lot of flack from horseman around the globe who were disappointed to see the future hall of famer use such an "amateurish" tactic in an attempt to win the Florida Derby pole vault his colt Dunkirk into the Run for the Roses.

Pletcher scratched Europe on Saturday morning leaving lightly raced blue-blood colt Dunkirk to fend for himself.

The Race: Florida Derby

As expected Quality Road took up the races early lead and was hardly challenged on the front end covering the 1 1/8 mile race under Jockey John Velazquez in a time of 1:47.3.

Dunkirk for his part looked flat, sitting seven lengths off the lead for the majority of the race before finally launching a bid at the top of the stretch. As the field turned for home Dunkirk made a sweeping move passing the majority of the field in one fowl swoop to put himself in contention at the top of the stretch. It looked very much like Dunkirk was about to mow down Quality Road and head straight to the Derby as the odd’s on choice. Instead Dunkirk arrived at the front of the pack to find a game Quality Road who out duelled Dunkirk throughout the stretch run.

Quality Road $4.40 beat Dunkirk by almost two lengths and will likely contest west coast operative Pioneerofthenile for favouritism on May 2nd in Kentucky.

Post Race: Florida Derby

Although I’ve already heard rumours of Dunkirk returning for the Derby Trial (Churchill Downs) or the Withers Stakes (Aqueduct) just seven days before the Derby, I firmly believed Todd Pletcher when he said that the Florida Derby would be the only opportunity for his colt to qualify for the Derby’s twenty horse field. It is obvious that Mr. Pletcher and the ownership group behind Dunkirk have been incredibly patient with their 3.7 million dollar auction buy. The colt, Dunkirk never raced at the age of two and has only made the starting gate three time thus far in his three-year old campaign. It would defy two years of patience and hard-work for Pletcher to suddenly decide that his colt is competent enough to race in three graded stakes races in just thirty-five days.

Dunkirk may in fact belong in the Derby’s twenty horse field but it looks increasingly like this year marquee will be without it’s main attraction.

Zoltan Black

Complete Irony

Florida Derby winning rider John Velazquez, top rider for Team Pletcher will head to the Kentucky Derby under Quality Road a James Jerkins trainee. It’s kind of ironic that Team Pletcher’s Derby hopes were dashed by the teams top jock John Velazquez riding Quality Road for the James Jerkens outfit.

It is even more ironic that Johnny V will enter the starting gate aboard Quality Road for the Kentucky Derby with a chance of winning a race that has eluded trainer Todd Pletcher thus far in what has otherwise been a stellar career as one of Americas leading horsemen.

Even more Road to the Kentucky Derby...Spotlight -- Florida Derby

If Dunkirk is your fancy... ... the time to strike is now.

With the Florida Derby scheduled for Saturday afternoon at around 5:40pm est Gulfstream Park will either become the super highway to Louisville or another resting place for the never ending list of Derby contenders.

Three of the fields nine entries are serious contenders for the Derby Crown, Kenneth McPeek trainee Theregoesjojo, the Edward Evans owned Quality Road and undefeated monster Dunkirk.

Although Quality Road will be gunning for the early lead on Saturday afternoon Dunkirk’s trainer Todd Pletcher has cross entered stablemate Europe to insure an honest pace from Quality Road through the races early fractions. Pletcher, a future hall of famer is so desperate to make it to Kentucky for the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby that he is prepared to send out Europe as a sacrificial lamb or in this case a sacrificial rabbit. The reason for this bold moves is simple... ...Blue blooded newcomer Dunkirk has won both of his two career starts, however entry into the Kentucky Derby is based solely on graded stakes earning of which Dunkirk has none.

If Dunkirk along with Pletcher and Co. intend to make the starting gate at Churchill Downs they have only one shot to collect the required graded stakes earnings that will garner them a Derby Day invitation and that’s to win Saturday’s Florida Derby.

If Dunkirk fails to make the winners circle on Saturday afternoon Todd Pletcher and the ownership group behind the colt will be forced to reschedule there colts coming out party for Preakness Day at Pimlico.

If Dunkirk wins... ...it`s straight to Kentucky as the odds on, undefeated favourite at a price that will make even an iron stomach like myself reach for the Pepto...forty cents on the dollar.

If you like Dunkirk...why wait tell Derby Day to make it count?

If Dunkirk makes the Derby it’s all but a forgone conclusion that he will go into the gate as the races heavy favourite likely paying around thirty cents for ever dollar you wager.

So what’s a gambler to do?

The answer is simple, head over to www.bowmans.com where Dunkirk is currently being offered up at the meaty odds of 9/1. Keep in mind that this means that the Todd Pletcher trainee will need to win both of his next two races in order for you to claim a potential payout, but if you really, really like Dunkirk there’s definitely no time like the present.

Z. Black

The Kentucky Derby Futures Pool #3 will open next week and I expect that Dunkirk will be the Pool’s 5-2 favourite, again too little to late.

Even more Road to the Kentucky Derby...Spotlight -- Dunkirk

Dunkirk

Blue Blood racer Dunkirk has his work cut out for him if he expects to showcase his immaculate lineage on May 2nd in the Kentucky.

Saturdays running of the Florida Derby may be Dunkirk’s only chance to qualify for the first leg of the North American horse-racing triple-crown. You see Dunkirk, the Blue Blood colt trained by American uber trainer Todd Pletcher got of to a little bit of a late start to his career. In fact the colt never even raced as a two year old; a Kentucky Derby trend that has not been bucked since Apollo claimed the Rose’s way back in 1882. Now Dunkirk finds himself on the outside looking in.

Derby hopeful are selected from a list of North America’s top graded stakes earners and invitations are seldom refused. The Kentucky Derby, the apple of every trainers eye; often times features young colts and the occasional filly who are simply overmatched on race day but that is something I don’t expect to change anytime soon. A horse with all the class in the world; Dunkirk just doesn’t have the graded earings to measure up to his peers; should the colt claim the Florida Derby the graded earnings argument would all but crumble, leaving Dunkirk the odd on choice heading into the first weekend in May.

Pletcher's wows

Dunkirk (Unbridleds Song) isn’t the only Blue Blood hanging around owners Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith stables. Three time Eclipse Award winning trainer Todd Pletcher has also made a couple of appearances which may or may not bode well for the ownership group that paid a whopping $3,700,000 to land the roan or grey colt at the 2007 Keenland Association September Yearling Sale. Pletcher as a trainer is certainly Americas finest, however Mr. Pletcher’s record in the Kentucky Derby is... ...to say the very least unimpressive. Year after year Todd Plecther has sent a seemingly endless list of Derby hopefuls to the gate at Churchill but has yet to claim a victory. In fact Pletcher record in all Triple Crown races is simply abysmal. For a guy who wins over twenty percent of all his starts (a near impossibility in the world of Thoroughbred horse racing) putting up a giant goose egg at the big show has become somewhat of a trademark for the illustrious Mr. Pletcher.

Dunkirk chance will come Saturday in the $750,000 1 1/8 mile Grade 1 Florida Derby.

If Dunkirk finishes any worse than first, he will be forced to spend the early part of May preparing for the second leg of North Americas Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes @ Pimlico.

If Dunkirk wins, then it off to the Kentucky likely as the unbeaten 3-5 favourite.

Z. Black

Watch for James Jerkens trainee Quality Road to challenge Dunkirk in the 1 1/8 mile Grade 1 Flordia Derby. Quality Road has missed the winners cirlce only onece, finishing 2 3/4 lengths behind Theregoesjojo in a Gulfstream Allowance race back in January.

Attending as a neutral... ...The OHL playoffs are underway

Videos

No footage found.

The Ontario Hockey League always puts on a stellar show but there is something to be attained by covering a game as a neutral.

This evening I will take my travelling road show to the Hershey Centre is Mississauga for game three of the first round playoff match between the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors and the visiting Barrie Colts.

Mississauga currently leads the seven game series two games to none and will be look to take a commanding three - nil lead when the Majors take to their home rink sometime around 7:30 this evening.

I am a Brampton Battalion fan, so I’m hard pressed just to come up with two teams I dislike for than Mississauga and Barrie. St. Mike’s play their home games just five minutes from the Bunker in Brampton (Home of the Brampton Battalion) creating an instant regional rivalry well Barrie has set themselves in as the concement thorn in the side of the my hometown Troop.

Barrie seeing a lot of rubber

Mississauga has peppered Barrie goal keeping managing eighty shot in just two contests well scoring eleven goals. On the opposite side Barrie has been kept quite by Majors goalie JP Anderson who has stopped a lofty 48 of the 52 shots he’s faced thus far in the series.

Expect things to be a little chippy

With the Barrie Colt facing down a three nothing deficit and possibly an early exit from the first round expect this evenings contest to be a little bit on the chippy side. The two teams combined for an action packed eighty penalty minute through the first two game and nobody is expecting that to change on Monday evening.

Tickets are available

As is the case with all OHL games not featuring child prodigy John Tavares; plenty of good ticket are still available. Check out the Hershey Centre box office for more details http://www.stmichaelsmajors.com/

Even more Road to the Kentucky Derby...Spotlight -- Old Fashioned

Videos

No footage found.

It’s 45 days before the Kentucky Derby... and following a hectic weekend (San Felipe, Louisiana Derby and the Rebel) nobody’s any closer to figuring this thing out.

The Kentucky Derby really is the ultimate jig-saw puzzle, just when you think you got it all figured out a heavy favourite loses in a soft situation or an unranked competitor arrives on the scene in a monestrous way (see this weeks Rebel Stakes from Oaklawn Park).

Over the next six week I will attempt to bring my readers a little bit closer to the Kentucky Derby without them having to travel to Louisville, buy a funny hat or learn the local lingo.

Every year the Kentucky Derby produces a cast of characters straight out of central casting. The blow hard Trainers, greed ridden Owners and baby faced Jockeys that the Networks depend on to carry their infinite pre-race coverage.

Initially I was going to write a little bit about five of the real stars of the Kentucky Derby, the horses. More specifically a little blurb about my top five Derby contenders six weeks before the big dance but I’ve wasted my time and obliterated my space so I will have to reel these sucker off one at a time, which may actually leave me enough time to write about more then just five of the races potential winners.

The Kentucky Derby Top5 - (March 20th 2009)

#1 Old Fashioned - Must bounce back

#2 Pioneerofnile - Won’t see real "dirt" before Derby Day

#3 Friesan Fire - The last Derby contender I doubted this much was world class runner Curlin

#4 I Want Revenge - Could not get past Pioneer on poly, but toppled foes on dirt in the Gotham

#5 Quality Road - (Not Nominated) Florida Derby pole vault?

#1. Old Fashioned... trained by Kentucky native Larry Jones may have taken a giant step backward this Saturday finishing second in the 2009 running of the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park to the virtually unknown Win Willy. Old Fashioned left the gate a strong 2-5 favourite only to watched 56-1 Win Willy blow past him in the final 16th of the mile and a sixteenth race. The buzz track-side on Sunday morning was that Old Fashioned, who failed in his initial attempt over the mile and a sixteenth distance would not be able to handle the Kentucky Derby’s gruelling mile and a quarter on the second of May.

Not so fast.

Old Fashioned may have finished 2 1/4 lengths behind the shocking performance of worst to first longshot winner Win Willy but Old Fashioned still managed to pull the wool over the eyes of seven other thoroughbreds, besting third place finisher Poltergeist by at least 8 eight lengths on a day where he (Old Fashioned) was admittedly not at his best (an intriguing angle for those of us who were glad to see Old Fashioned throw in a clunker before the first Saturday in May)

In terms of pedigree Old Fashioned seems to lack the required connections to reach the Derby’s 1 mile and a quarter distance and will need to be amongst the best of his line if he is to prevail at Churchill Downs.

Cuba and Japan To Square Off In Round 2 Grudge Match

Videos

No footage found.

Zoltan Black reporting from The World Baseball Classic...

A less than stellar Cuban National Squad routed the home-side Mexico on their way to claiming first place in Group B and securing a blockbuster second round match-up against 06' Classic winners’ Japan.

Revenge

Revenge will certainly be on the minds of the men from the tiny Carribean island of Cuba when they face Group A runners-up Japan at PETCO Park in San Diego, California. The site of one of Cuban baseballs harshest moments, PETCO Park in San Diego played host to the finals of 2006 World Baseball Classic where Cuba was dispatched 10-6 by a superior Japanese Squad lead by Major League All-Star Ichiro Suzuki.

This time things are a little bit different . . . The first and most striking difference between the 2006 edition of team Japan and the current 08' assembly is the fact that the team now has, thanks to the teams 06' WBC performance; multiple Major Leaguers yet are still struggling to find first gear in this year’s edition of the Classic.

The Cuba squad for their part has been an exhibit in excellence throughout both World Baseball Classics and has reminded me this time around of a steam engine. Sometimes the technology of the past, although appearing inferior to the quality workmanship of the present is in fact the better operation.

Cubanditos

All-Star Cuban DH Yosvani Peraza who sent a moon-shot into the night in the dying embers of the game against Australia started today’s game at DH going 3-4 with 2 runs and adding 1 RBI to improving his 08' WBC base total to seven in just four plate appearances.

Cuban Superstar Frederich Cepeda hit a walk-off three run home-run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Cubans the short innings victory.

{During the World Baseball Classic a game is ended by MERCY or GONG rule when a team leads by fifteen runs or more after five innings or ten runs or more after seven.}

Hawaii Five-O Sighting @ The World Baseball Classic

Zoltan Black....reporting from the World Baseball Classic

It funny how the little things urks me.

Ever since Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Brandon League made his big league debut "way" back in 2004 I’ve been hoping, check that, I’ve been begging for the Hawaiian native to change his number to 50 so the fans could coin the slender smoke hurler Hawaii Five-O.

My attempts have elicited little response from Brandon other then the odd sneer and a couple of friendly chuckles, however I have, if nothing else been determined in my attempts.

Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre in Toronto all hope of me ever convincing Brandon to "embrace" his roots was tossed to the wayside when American International Shane Victorino, also a native of Hawaii dawned the number 50 well playing for team USA during the first round of the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

American born baseball studs could be heard encouraging Victorino during his plate appetences.... "Lets go Hawaii Five-O" "Good eye, 5-O" "Way to go Hawaii Five-0

Team USA or the "redeem" team as there ridiculously being called squeaked out a one run victory against a feisty Canadian squad that refused to let down on there home turf.

The games final score much like the World Baseball Classic it self appear to be mostly irrelevant in the eyes of the North American public. So why waste the print....no final score.
