Inside the Box (NP Sports Card Review)

Allow me to introduce you to the multibillion dollar industry of sport collectables as seedy and corrupt as a small town racetrack.

Welcome to first ever edition of Inside the Box, Now Public’s weekly look at sport card and the unbelievable industry that surrounds them.

I am well aware that sport cards make grown-men think of nothing other then stale gum and priceless childhood memories and that a foray into anything deeper is likely to fall on deaf ear, however a couple of day’s ago a penned an article titled Modus Operandi 2009 where I stated that I would no longer be catering to the overwhelming majority.

For sport fans and collector alike

The segments will be as much infomercial as they are onscreen experiment with both guest’s and viewers’ learning a few things along the way. The segments will be funded entirely by myself, so you’re not likely to see any Babe Ruth’s, Honus Wagner’s or any other collectable that Joe the Plumber couldn’t purchase at his neighbourhood Wal-mart store.

This week we will be looking at the 2008-2009 Fleer Ultra Hockey collection. We have purchased a 12 pack, 5 card retail box($22.99). We have also purchased a bonus pack for our two blaster today. The package was purchased as an individual pack at the retail cost of about three dollars from a multi-retail with no knowledge of sports card or collectibles. Often time these multi-purpose stores are the safest places to purchase cards or collectables because you are unlikely to find a Wal-mart employee riffling through trading cards to capture the latest high value insert. Sports collectable shops on the other hand are often run by seedy individuals with even seedy intentions.

So what about E-Bay?

The elephant in the room will have to wait until a future posting, until then enjoy the video and wish me luck with next weeks segment.
