More Road to the Kentucky Derby...2009 Fountain of Youth Stakes
Videos
Trapped at the office for the Fountain of Youth
It’s funny how the wind of change blow....this time yesterday I was under the impression that I’d be spending my Saturday afternoon eating cheese doodles, gambling fiercely and berating unsuccessful riders from the comfort of my own living room.
Instead I’m at the office chained to my desk missing key races on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
The 1 Mile Fountain of Youth Stakes @ Gulfstream Park and the 11/8 Mile Sham Stakes @ Santa Anita will both go off this afternoon with a host of talented three-year old some of whom are hot on the Derby trail.
The Sham field will rally around Derby outsiders: Front runner The Pamplemousse, Todd Pletcher Trainee Take The Points, The straight forward Smart Bid and Turfer Bourdon Bay.
The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream which may actually go to post before this article does is full of legitimate Derby contenders. Speed demons Notonthesamepage and This Ones For Phil should be clubbing each other for the early lead; well jockey Julien Leparoux and his mount Capt. Candyman Can anxiously pursue a daunting pace. Entrants Beethoven and Quality Road could prove to be worthy adversaries in this spot despite neither having much of a chance of making the twenty horse Kentucky Derby field.
I will update this post with race result and hopefully video coverage as soon as they are available..

Win Free TIM HORTONS coffee for a year
Roll-up the rim is back, this time with a chance to win free coffee for an entire year.
For those unfamiliar with the Tim Hortons roll-up the rim contest it’s never been more obvious that you have never travelled to the great Canadian north.
Allow me the honour of filling you in... ...
during the popular roll-up the rim season Tim Hortons take-out coffee cups can be found scattered throughout the community with their once proud rims un-rolled, leaving the paper cups discard and dishevelled. This year Tim Hortons offers a new twist on an old favourite... Everyday from now until the end of March Tim Hortons will be giving away FREE coffee for a year online, no purchase necessary. That’s right free coffee for a year and you don’t even need to buy anything. Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects......17-year-old Mets Phenom
On Tuesday morning Baseball America unveiled their annual list of the Top 100 Major League Baseball Prospects.
MLB Playoff standout David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays, who threw 12 strikeouts for the Rays during the teams 2008 playoff run, scattered 9 hits and allowed 3 runs over 14 innings of work. This hardly qualifies Price as a "prospect" candidate, none the less Baseball America ranked the left handed hurler from Vanderbilt number #2 overall.
This isn’t really a knock on Baseball America or a slight on the young Mr. Price but honestly?
Did the Rays young Phenom not surpass "prospect" status when he won Game 2 of the 2008 ALCS against the Boston Red Sox.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, Cardinals outfielder Colby Rasmus, Braves Pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jason Heyward round out the list top five prospects.
Gold in them there hills
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey #14, Marlins outfielder Mike Stanton #16, Red Sox first-basemen Lars Anderson #17 and White Sox short-stop Gordon Beckham #20 are all notable prospects with bright futures but look a little further down the list and you might find a true gem like 17 year-old Mets prospect Wilmer Flores #47
Flores the youngest of Baseball America's top 100 prospects is likely at least two or three seasons away from his big league debut which certainly qualifies the native of Valencia, Venezuela as a prospect.
With talent like Joes Reyes and David Wright patrolling the Mets infield it seems increasingly likely that the Mets organization will be afford the luxury of taking their time when it comes to developing their star prospect.
Flores however has other ideas
Flores quickly outgrew the Appalachian League after just 245 at bats and was promoted to the New York-Penn Leagues (A) Brooklyn Cyclones for the remainder of th season.
It is expected that Flores will return to the Cyclones lineup when the New York-Penn League resumes play in June but it is still unclear weather Flores will remain at short-stop of be moved to the hot-corner where the Cyclones can take full advantage of the young mans cannon for an arm.
Check out Baseball America's full list of the top 100 prospects.....

Inside the Box 4 (NP Sports Card Review)...Free Hockey Cards
Videos
Today is National Hockey Card Day in Canada but the crew at Insidethebox just couldn’t wait so we decided to brake into a 2008-2009 Fleer Ultra Hockey Hobby Box (Retail - $65.99)
The break turned out to be more of an anticipatory reaction to Saturday’s big day then an official box review, although I will attempt to locate a copy of the Fleer Hobby Box specs to be posted at the end of this article.
Local retailers across Canada will be giving away five (5) card packs of Upper Deck Hockey card as part of a National Hockey Card Day promotion. The individual cards, part of a fifteen card set will feature NHL rookies, superstars and legends and will be available at your favourite hobby shop, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us or London Drugs.
This weeks box bust really has very little to do with National Hockey Card Day, except for the fact that the entire crew was eecked all week about the up coming promotion, so much so that we had to go out and buy a hobby box, at retail cost to keep the hound at bay.
This weeks box bust produced a Green Saku Koivu Ex Essential Credential’s card; print limited to 50 copies.
FOR ALL OR ANY FANS OF THE MONTREAL CANADIAN...
This item will find it way on to E-Bay in no short order with a discount for NowPublic readers (interested parties can message me here @ NowPublic for further information)
Don’t forget to pick up your free hockey cards, check out the list of participating Canadian dealers...

The Marion/O'neal deal was a succesful cash grab for a team with dim playoff hopes, but with the Toronto Raptors playoff hopes all but busted; the acquisition of 7-footer Patrick O' Bryant from the Boston Celtic capped off a quality trading period showing from Rap's GM Bryan Colangelo.

Early Kentucky Derby Favourite Tops Smarty Jones In Season Debut
Early Kentucky Derby Favourite Old Fashioned crushed a field of lesser likes at Oaklawn Park on Monday evening.
The 1 mile dirt race was completed in an extremely relevant 1:37.41.
Old Fasioned broke sharply and was quickly taken in hand by Jockey Ramon Dominguez while pesky speedster Silver City trained by Bret W. Calhoun controlled the early fractions.
Silver City blew through the first six furlongs at a rapid 1:11.04 before being joined on the front end by a hard working 2-5 race favourite Old Fashioned.
"He had to work a little hard then the typical 2-5 shot has to, but Old Fashioned pulled clear late and came up on top in his 2009 debut" say’s Evan Hammonds of racing industry standard The Blood Horse.
It’s true Old Fashioned, trained by the newly famed future hall of famer Larry Jones whose Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles regrettably broke down just second after crossing the finish line in last years Kentucky Derby had to work a little bit to acquire a win in his season debut but it was hardly a lead of single.
Old Fasioned who had not seen competitive racing since November 28th, 2008 when racing as a two-year old in the Remsen Stakes (Gr. 2) at Aqueduct Racetrack had an excuse for being a little rusty following the three month lay-off. Old Fashioned won the Remsen (Gr.2) by 7 ½ lengths going a mile and eighth, completing a perfect 3 for 3 rookie campaign.
The colt (Old Fashioned) looked sharp and very professional breaking from the gate on Monday evening. He had very little trouble catching race leader Silver City when asked by Jockey Ramon Dominguez to close the gap and even less trouble eclipsing both the 1: 37.41 put down by last year’s race winner and Kentucky Derby show horse Denis of Cork and the 1:37.57 run by 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones.
That’s right Old Fashioned ran a faster mile then Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones did back in 2004 when Smarty nearly claimed North-America’s elusive horse-racing triple-crown.
Big news, right? Wrong!
The big news regarding Old Fashioned and his Southwest Stake performance wasn’t that he beat the time set down by a horse six years his elder and long since retired.
No, the big news was that Old Fashioned eclipsed a time set down just twelve months ago by eventual Kentucky Derby show horse Denis of Cork.
Why is this big news? Easy.
Denis of Cork who finished third in last years Kentucky Derby and appeared to be closing ground on race winner Big Brown was a quality horse that proved his worth on horse racing’s biggest stage. It’s clear already at this early juncture of the racing season that this years field of Derby Contender has no Barbaro or Big Brown, heck the field hardly has a Curlin or a Street Sense to its credit, so a horse on par with the likes of Denis of Cork should easily be the top dog in this years Derby class.
The only thing Trainer Larry Jones need be concerned with from here on out is making sure his colt makes it to the big dance with all his nut and bolt in order, from here on in its clear sailing through the Rebel Stakes (Gr.3) past the Arkansas Derby (Gr.2) and on to the big dance on May 2nd @ Churchill Downs.
Sidenote:
I noticed during the Southwest Stakes that on the final turn for home, Old Fashioned seemed slightly distracted by the crowd that had gather to witness the his season debut.
I’m not really sure how a trainer goes about correct this problem, but what I am sure of is that it is in fact a problem.
When the Run for the Roses rolls around in May the horses on the track will gaze into a sea of humanity (Over 150'000 on the lawn at Churchill Downs) and their at the top of the stretch staring into a drunken mob the Kentucky Derby will be decided by the contender that flinches the least.

Vineyard Haven last years most accomplished dirt bound juvenile suffered a set back Thursday afternoon at Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba racecourse finishing fourth well behind a trio of fellow American bred’s.

(A-Rod Confession) Dark Day For Image Conscious Americans
Monday afternoon witnessed the demise of two of America’s most image conscious citizens.
R & B singer Chris Brown and Professional Baseball player Alex Rodriguez were both outed on Monday morning well their individual stories gained significant momentum throughout the afternoon.
Two times platinum R & B sensation Christopher Maurice Brown didn’t make it to Sunday evenings Grammy Awards Ceremony, instead the young Mr. Brown spent the evening in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department following an incident involving fellow R & B singer and Brown’s current girlfriend Rihanna.
[q url=""]Brown turned himself in at the
's Wilshire station around 6:30 p.m on February 8, 2009 and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats,[37] while under investigation for domestic violence charges, following an argument with fellow singer and girlfriend Rihanna in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles police report did not name the female in the incident as is policy, but stated that she had "suffered visible injuries."[38] However, various news media such as the Los Angeles Times, CNN, and MSNBC have all identified the alleged victim as Rihanna.[39][40][41] He was set to perform at the \fs24cf3 2009 Grammy Awards, but was removed and replaced by Justin Timberlake and Al Green
[/q]
The second piece of the Monday lunch-bag let down involved future hall of fame baseball player Alex Rodriguez who confessed to ESPN’s Peter Gammons that he did in fact use a "banned" substance during his time with the Texas Ranger (2001-2003)
Rodriguez has long been seen as Major League Baseball’s golden boy and the only slugger to play through the "chemical era" and still have an ounce of credibility. That all changed Monday when Rodriguez told Peter Gammons the he had in fact used a performance enhancing substance...
ALEX RODRIGUEZ: When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me, and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day.
Back then, it was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young. I was stupid. I was naive. And I wanted to prove to everyone that, you know, I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. And I did take a banned substance. You know, for that I'm very sorry and deeply regretful.
... The culture back then, and Major League Baseball overall, was very -- I just feel that, you know, I'm just sorry. I'm sorry for that time. I'm sorry to my fans. I'm sorry for my fans in Texas. It wasn't until then that I ever thought about a substance of any kind, and since then, I've proved to myself and to everyone that I don't need any of that
Source: sports.espn.go.com
Both Rodriguez and Brown have been viewed as crystal clean up until their respective misgivings over the pat twenty-four hours, the most interesting thing going forward will be watching just how the fans, media and their fellow colleagues embrace these individual as they attempt to move forward with their respective careers.
A-rod, A-fraud, A-roid or what ever you want to call him, Alex Rodriguez could potentially make a run at MLB career Home-Run record and is in-spite of his recent confession is a certified hall of famer.
Brown is versatile entertainer, a throw-back to a bygone era when an entertainer had to sing, dance and act just to get their fifteen minutes.
Brown’s offence although not entirely without precedence is not what the general public expects from salty R & B singers who collect the majority of their riches from ladies, young and old who believe the word in their songs.
For a male R & B singer domestic abuse is certainly sin #1 but for a Major League Baseball player domestic abuse is unfortunately all to common. The number one sin of a baseball player is gambling, just ask Peter Rose Major League Baseball’s all-time hit leader who has been shut-out from all things MLB, including the hall of fame for the past twenty years. Sin number two against the fraternity of Major League baseball players is steroid use or more specifically the use of performance enhancing substances but up until this point their has been little heard from those willing to admit to their indiscretions.
New York Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte admitted to "using" but gave little details of the events surrounding his decision to dope up. In contrast Ex-Major Leaguer Jose Canseco will talk to anyone, any time about steroid in Major League baseball and has already admit that he did indeed partake in the roid-rage that was the nineteen-nineties.
Alex Rodriguez has choosen a uniquie path honesty...weather this path bare fruit perhaps only time will tell but what we can be sure of is that the path to oblivion chosen by former Major Leaguers like Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens has bore no fruit.
Check out the full transcript of Peter Gammons interview with Alex Rodriguez....
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3895281
A tear in my beer
PETER GAMMONS: One of your goals all along has been to be in the Hall of Fame. Do you think a player who has tested positive or admitted to taking illegal substances is disqualified from Cooperstown?
ALEX RODRIGUEZ: I hope not. I hope not. I mean, I think every case is different. I think you have to look at the data. If you take a career of, you know, 25 years, and you take away three, or you take away 2½, or you take away one, I think overall you have to make a decision.
I don't have a Hall of Fame vote. It would be a dream to be in the Hall of Fame, and I hope one day I get in
