Kentucky Derby Already!
Videos
The icicles have barley melted from my front porch but somehow I find myself thinking about mid May and Kentucky’s annual Run for the Roses.
Colt’s This ones for Phil (117) , You Luckie Mann (1**) and Notonthesamepage (115) have already ripped off record setting triple digit Beyer speed figures to become the youngest trio since the Daily Racing Forum began publishing (1992) these figures to achieve such lofty numbers.
It’s a little bit early to be day dreaming about mint-juleps and the Louisville heat but after Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. lead This ones for Phil to a two length victory at an astoundingly fast 1 minute 9.1 seconds over six furlongs in Saturday’s Sunshine Millions Dash at Gulfstream Park the subject has been broached.
The second place horse in the Sunshine Millions, You Luckie Mann was the odds on choice going to gate but was left at the turn when Dutrow’s This ones for Phil powered passed, four wide to scoop the lions share of the $250 000 purse.
The third member of this incredible trio, Notonthesamepage has completed the same six furlong distance in a blistering time of 1 minute 8.4 seconds in the Spectacular Bid Stakes. A victory made all the more impressive by the presence of Sunshine Million favourite You Luckie Mann. Notonthesamepage lived up to his name, at least in the Spectacular Bid beating race favourite You Luckie Mann to the finish line by more than 8 horse lengths and grabbing a 115 Beyer speed figure, a figure the would temporarily make Notonthesamepage the fastest three-year old since the speed figures inception.
I must admit, the fish tale that was this years Spectacular Bid is better told by a qualified journalist like the Forum`s Dick Jerardi Hard to predict Notonthesamepage's 115

Ah! The Mysteries of Captain Cook....
To be aboard a great ship like the HMS Resolution or her sister the HMS Discovery with Capt. Cook at the helm and nothing but exploration and open water ahead must have been a fantastic feeling.
For the crew of these gigantic ships fantasy clashed with reality as Capt. Cook crossed rivers between Deck Poseidon and English born Madman.
Discovery the act, not the ship was always at Captain James Cook’s beck and call until on his third and final voyage when the Captain plunged waist deep into insanity, legacy and the search for the Northwest Passage.

Just an observation...Politicos and the State of Illinois Racing
Videos
Just an observation...
If Illinois Politicos like state Governor Rod Blagojevich and house member Bobby Rush spent as much time trying to prop up the Illinois State Racing Commission as they have trying to tear it down, Illinois could easily be the model by which all other Racing Commissions are rebuilt.
Blagojevich understanding that Illinois State Racing would act as a personal finance account for his own political aspirations is stomach churning.
Likewise House Representative Booby Rush has thwarted Illinios Racing at every turn becoming a sort of off-track racing vigilante, sparking this reporter to ask to question... what’s up with the State of gambling in Illinios.
Afterthoughts
Don’t get the wrong idea respected Illinios State Rep. Bobby Rush does not belong in the same breath as a scuzzy windbag like Blago.
Rush the consummate track-side politician has seen passage of quality legislation, including a bill recognizing African-American Jockey Legend Jimmy Winkfield back in 2005

Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye

The view from the other-side of the pond...
Watching the swearing in of the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama from a locale, somewhere north of the Great Lakes I was stunned by just how much the whole parade reminded me not of Hulkamania but of the giant hippy hay-party known as Woodstock.
Too many people, not enough water, Port-o-potty premiums.
Perhaps Barackstock would have been more fitting than Obamamania.
Washington was run over by the visiting droves, thousand flocked to the cities centre for a brief glimpse of the man of the hour and Obama delivered strolling down Pennsylvania Avenue to the delight of the on-looking crowd.
America, little brother to the Great White North
You have surpassed your brother with giant leaps in the area of racial equality. As you bask in the glow of a new day, your brother unenlightened, struggles to recover the past. Columnist Innocent Madawo said it best in a column entitled "Following Barack’s footsteps" which appeared in the Toronto Sun earlier this week when he said
"unlike our peers in the U.S., a lot of black Canadians in positions of influence dwell in the victim-hood of the slave era. It is this pre-historic attitude that is driving such self-destructive programs as an Africentric school campaign in Toronto"
Toronto foray into Africentic schooling is flawed from its very root and will only strike to separate our children further. The steel drum may represent a very significant cultural icon but what makes sense for future generation course in computer networking or lessons on the steel drum.

Inside the Box 2 (NP Sports Card Review)

Clearance.
Buying last years Hockey Cards makes little sense except when last years card are on clearance.
Push out the Hockey, make way for Baseball. Monday, February 3rd marks the release date of the 2009 edition of Upper Deck Series 1 Baseball. This year Upper Deck celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the very first Upper Deck collection. The 1989 Baseball set with eighty-nine Ken Griffey Jr autographed (1989) rookie card randomly inserted into this year’s Series 1 packs. The inserted 1989 Griffey Jr card, the hallmark of modern sport cards was the very first card to roll of the Upper Deck manufacturing line twenty years ago. Junior autographed eighty-nine copies of his 1989 rookie card with the special insignia of "twenty years" and Upper Deck has dutifully inserted those card into random packs of this year’s first Baseball release slated for Feb 3rd.
All this talk of Baseball cards means a reduction in the clamour over Hockey cards. Big box retailers are clearing out stock to make room for this year’s Baseball cards and for Hockey collectors this can often be a good time to pick up sharp deals on slightly stale stock. Oddly enough this week I was privy to a few of these slightly stale bargains and was able to pick up two twelve-pack blaster boxes of last year’s Upper Deck Hockey. Both Series 1 and 2 were available at the same cost and offer significant value considering the topnotch rookies found in both sets.
Series 1 contains both Montreal Canadian’s Goalie Carey Price (Rookie Card - Book Value = $100) and Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (Rookie Card - Book Value = $80.00)
Series 2 is perhaps a little less weighted but does feature Chicago Blackhawks team captain Jonathan Toews (Rookie - Book Value = $80.00)
I’m a Toews collector, so the decision really wasn’t all that difficult. I purchased two boxes, twenty-four packs of 2007-08 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey at $1.50 per pack, almost half the retail price.
On the way to the cash I also spied an irregular looking three pack of this year’s Upper Deck Black Diamond Hockey. The three pack box appeared to have one pack that was a lot thicker than the rest, perhaps a jersey/swatch card or some other exciting goodie. I purchased this pack ($12.00) on a whim, as a bonus to this week’s insidethebox pack blasters and the usual debate ensued. Is there a special goodie inside the magic pack or does the pack contain nothing more than an oversized piece of cardboard advertising, a trick used by Upper Deck and other sport card manufacture attempting to dishearten unruly pack spies.

Simmons Vs The OHL prt2......Two stars, two courses...
Videos
Thursday morning was round two in the epic battle forming between Sun Columnist Steve Simmons and the Ontario Hockey League.
For the second time in less then a week Mr. Simmons has decided to use his forum (a column in a major Toronto tabloid) to lampoon the Ontario Hockey League.
In defence of Mr. Simmons the article Unnecessary Roughness was not the slag job of last Friday’s Apathy greets juniors. Mr. Simmons in his infinite wisdom even decided to try making a few friends amongst the OHL’s elite by sighting the tremendous job done by commissioner David Branch in attempting to "stay ahead of the curve"
The tone of Mr. Simmons latest offering is certainly mellow compared to early offerings but yet again Mr. Simmons seems to mis the mark. The Ontario Hockey League is an amateur sports organization and only as good as the people that support the product, it is not the NHL’s with all the glitz and glamour of a billion dollars in ad revenue. Simmons is a bully. Wow I never thought I would call Steve Simmons a bully but there it is, in bold print.
With millions of dollars exchanged daily, grown men and international recognition the NHL seems like a more adequate target for Mr. Simmons pen but in the name of not falling into the same trap of negativity I digress . . .
Two stars, two courses
As play got under way in the OHL on Thursday two young stars were making headlines for completely different reasons. Sure fire first overall draft choice John Tavares (London) was making headlines due to an "upper body" injury that would keep him out of the London Knight’s line-up just day after being acquired by the Knight in blockbuster trade that witnessed the exodus of Knights Chistian Thomas, Scott Valentine and Michael Zador as well as 6 Knights draft picks.
The other future first rounder Matt Duchene (Brampton) was making headlines by wooing the crowd at the Powerade Centre with a quick assist, a knee buckling goal and a sixty minute effort that left little doubt that the young Mr. Duchene deserved to be the second ranked OHL skater going into the 09 NHL Entry Draft in June.

Canada’s Junior Hockey Controversy
Videos
The big what for? at my local arena this week had nothing to do with the five new faces that had strolled into town over the past week. Forwards Anthony Peluso, Andrew Merrett, Matthew Kang as well as over-age defenceman Josh Day and U.S. national team keeper Thomas McCollum.
The chatter didn’t even concern the young men who had be discharged prior to commencement of the second half of the OHL season. Goalie Brandon Foote (Guelph) Forward Josh Shalla (Guelph) and Forward Kyle DeCoste (Sault Ste. Marie)
The hot button issue this Sunday at the Bunker in Brampton was an article written by Toronto Sun sports columnist Steve Simmons following the Troops 6-2 victory over the visiting Sudbury Wolves on Thursday night.
The article, which I found to be an entirely too honest look at the state of Junior hockey in Canada appeared in the Friday morning addition of the Toronto Sun. Initially I wasn’t upset by the article, instead I viewed the Simmons article Apathy greets juniors as a rally cry and quality reason for me to buy tickets to Sunday afternoons game against the Barrie Colts.
Personally I never miss a Battalion game
and I happen to agree with a lot of the things that Mr. Simmons had to say in his piece.
Although the Simmons article wasn’t completely accurate, the two thousand or so that showed up at just $5.00 a piece to welcome back the teams captain and freshly branded gold medalist Cody Hodgson was pathetic. To put this into perspective more people, around 600, turned out for the Battalions game against the Mississauga St. Mike’s Majors on New Years eve thanks in part to a minimum 50/50 pay out of $1600.
The buzz around the arena on Sunday afternoon left this reporter in a very quite minority.
Although I sough the Simmons article as a rally cry, a call to action and more specifically an honest account of just how vast the gulf is between club and country my fellow Battalion Boosters just didn’t see it the same way. The Simmons article was seen as brash, uninformed and a insult to the 1500 regular who never miss a Battalion home game.
No they don’t sell the joint out
and their voices are hardly heard in places like Sudbury and Plymouth but the Battalion fan base, like any other OHL fan base is alive and well. Honestly if Mr. Simmons has forgotten about the die-hard junior hockey fan, tracking cross province at his own expense to support some of Canada’s finest amateur athletes then maybe he should give up the cushy paper job and show us how it’s done.
I don’t know maybe that’s too harsh
but it was the consensus on Sunday afternoon in Brampton as a season high two-thousand six-hundred packed their way into the Powerade Centre in an effort to dispel rumour created by the Sun’s Steve Simmons earlier in the week.
Although I would never admit to my Booster Brigade buddies just how I felt about the now infamous article the proof as they say is in the pudding or in this case the gate receipt (2618) a season high. Maybe the folk’s in the Battalion front office should give Mr. Simmons a ring a ding and thank him for the five-hundred or so who turned out on Sunday just to make him look bad. On second though nix that idea and instead let’s consider banning this clown from attending games in the future.

Inside the Box (NP Sports Card Review)
Videos
Allow me to introduce you to the multibillion dollar industry of sport collectables as seedy and corrupt as a small town racetrack.
Welcome to first ever edition of Inside the Box, Now Public’s weekly look at sport card and the unbelievable industry that surrounds them.
I am well aware that sport cards make grown-men think of nothing other then stale gum and priceless childhood memories and that a foray into anything deeper is likely to fall on deaf ear, however a couple of day’s ago a penned an article titled Modus Operandi 2009 where I stated that I would no longer be catering to the overwhelming majority.
For sport fans and collector alike
The segments will be as much infomercial as they are onscreen experiment with both guest’s and viewers’ learning a few things along the way. The segments will be funded entirely by myself, so you’re not likely to see any Babe Ruth’s, Honus Wagner’s or any other collectable that Joe the Plumber couldn’t purchase at his neighbourhood Wal-mart store.
This week we will be looking at the 2008-2009 Fleer Ultra Hockey collection. We have purchased a 12 pack, 5 card retail box($22.99). We have also purchased a bonus pack for our two blaster today. The package was purchased as an individual pack at the retail cost of about three dollars from a multi-retail with no knowledge of sports card or collectibles. Often time these multi-purpose stores are the safest places to purchase cards or collectables because you are unlikely to find a Wal-mart employee riffling through trading cards to capture the latest high value insert. Sports collectable shops on the other hand are often run by seedy individuals with even seedy intentions.
So what about E-Bay?
The elephant in the room will have to wait until a future posting, until then enjoy the video and wish me luck with next weeks segment.

Modus Operandi, 2009
Videos
What kind of reporter/columnist would I be if I didn’t produce an early year article rife with political type ambition and starry-eyed Christmas leftovers. It has become a tradition amongst popular newspaper folk to lay out a resolution type piece as one of their first offerings of the new-year. This tradition has recently been extended to over-hyped t.v. personalities and just this year to the international blogosphere and now it my turn.
This year will be all about me
To hell with writing about the things I think people care about it’s time to start writing about the things that I care about and hoping that the rest of the world catches on. If you’re unfamiliar with my work, let’s just put it this way, I try desperately to deliver ink/pad gold well taking an interest in many things from generations past. I am a huge backer of the sport of kings; thoroughbred horse racing, Cigars and professional wrestling can also be added to my collection of fan-faded interests so one can imagine the trouble I have trying to appeal to the reading masses well dictating from a rejected prophecy.
The simple answer seems to be, give in, call off the search and start dictating from the crowd powered manuscript but that’s far from my Modus Operandi, 2009 will be bigger, bolder and more in your face.
This year I will introduce readers to the multibillion dollar industry of sport collectables, seedy and corrupt as any small town racetrack.
Doubt me?
Although I’m sure sport cards and autographed baseball’s hardly drums up images of dishonest box rifflers and unscrupulous card counterfeiters in the minds of the general public, we need look no further than the recent conviction of former grid-iron great O.J. Simpson for his involvement in a kidnapping/robbery scheme perpetrated for the purpose of reacquiring items that once belonged to the "juice’s" personal memorabilia collection.
I will also continue some of the positive trends I began during the latter part of 2008 such as attending more amateur sporting events, leaving the long lines, price gouging and Vince Carter’s to the rest of the world’s rubes.

Smoking, in America has not been cool since the Clinton clan roll
Smoking, in America has not been cool since the Clinton clan rolled into the White House.
Instead smokers have been pushed to the back burner, cornered, boxed in, ostracized and finally knocked of the stove altogether. President-elect Barack Obama could represent a bastion of light for smokers everywhere, including those like myself often considered hopeless romantics. It’s been a long time since tar and "feather" tobacconists were replaced in Washington by anti-smoking lobbyists, so it’s highly unlikely that the new President will be able sway the tide of anti-smoking sediment that has long washed over the American public.
What the most powerful voice in America today (Barack Obama) could do is make smoking cool again. That’s right I said it, Obama could stand to make smoking cool again, it’s been an eternity since George Burns and quite frankly I for one miss both the Marbourgh Man and Joe Camel. Smokers today are often portrayed as dirty, angry, unintellectual people, if portrayed at all, but an intelligent, mild mannered President with Obama’s style and charisma, who occasionally lights up may just be able to repair some of the irreversible damage done to the relationship between smoking and cool.
Z.B.
